RESEARCH

The programme for jointly executed research has been the core of the Network, building upon, the achievements of the Integration Activities. It has aimed to supply basic knowledge, tools, and technologies to better understand the biology of host - pathogen interactions. A work package on operational genomics (WP8) has integrated a subset of the scientific results so that outcomes of practical utility can be developed.

The major focus is on host - pathogen interactions relevant to animal and human health, including Salmonella in pigs and poultry, enterohaemorrhagic E. coli in cattle, mastitis in cattle, goats and sheep, and IPNV and ISAV infections in salmon.

Research Activities Leader: Mari Smits (Animal Sciences Group, ID-Lelystad, NL)

INTEGRATION

The Integrating Activities have focussed on achieving durable access to facilities, resources, software, tools and knowledge, as well as funding training courses, mobility and exchanges.

The sharing of biological, technological, bioinformatic and analytical resources and facilities, and the movement of scientists between partner organisations is essential to increase the strength of European research.

  •   WP1.1 Biological resources and facilities
  •   WP1.3 Bioinformatics
  •   WP1.4 Analytical tools
  •   WP3.1 Mobilisation of scientists
  •   WP4.1 Knowledge management

Integrating Activities Leader: Stephen Bishop (Roslin Institute, UK)

  • SPREADING OF EXCELLENCE

The Spreading of Excellence activities have ensured a two way interaction between industry and research. Industry has benefited from the research outcomes, and this has guided research priorities to meet industry needs. Additionally, Spreading of Excellence activities have facilitated training of scientists and communication with society.

Technology Transfer Facilitators have bridged the gap between research and industry, for instance by increasing industry awareness of projects, involving industry in project working groups, and mediating in the set up of projects with industrial involvement.

Ethical implications of animal health genomics have been discussed and internal ethical guidelines have been developed.

Spreading of Excellence Activities Leader:  Anne-Marie Neeteson (EFFAB, NL)

    MANAGEMENT

The Management Activities have provided the framework that was essential to the efficiency of the EADGENE Network.

Workpackage Leaders have reported to the Management Team which includes the Project Co-ordinator, the Project Manager, and the Activity Leaders.

The Management Team has been guided by the decisions of the Governing Council, which is composed of senior representatatives from the Partner Institutes.

The IPUDC has advised the Management Team on Industrial Property and other legal issues.

Management Activities Leader: Marie-Hélène Pinard van der Laan  (INRA, France)
